How I Fell In Love with Collecting Vinyls
Vinyls, where do we begin? Since I got over a breakup a few months ago, I knew I had to fall in love with a hobby that was something different from anything else that I already love. Yes, I'm a runner, a music lover, and have this blog, but I needed something a little different that could fuel my time. Well, ya know how they say music can really remedy anything, well it's certainly true - that's something I'll always believe. No matter what you're going through, music is there for you during the worst, the best, and everything in-between. That's when vinyls came into the picture for me.
A friend of mine had a turntable at his Charlotte apartment and I loved how it brought me back to being a kid and dancing in my parent's living room to "Puff the Magic Dragon" (LOL) and Disney records. From twirling and singing as a kid, I felt nostalgic to that love I used to have for all things vintage. To know surprise, turntables are definitely making a comeback, that's for sure, however, thanks to this friend I got back into it. His turntable, a hint of modern with a vintage-feel, inspired me to purchase my first red Crosley portable player. It wasn't anything special, but it was my first step to actually getting into the hobby of scouring the racks of dusty vinyls at Lunchbox Records, to collecting my dad's old 60's vinyls, to actually being handed down my dad's turntable to setup in my apartment. I guess you could say I have always been an 'old soul' - after all, most of my favorite bands include The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Steppenwolf, Ray Charles, The Rolling Stones, and more (thanks to my dad for playing a huge part in my love for 'real' musicians). An 'old soul', a romantic, whatever you want to call it - I'm absolutely hooked on the hobby.
For me vinyls are a way to appreciate the past and carry that feeling into my life now. From dancing as a little kid in my living room to now pouring myself a glass of vino, cooking some dinner, and playing a little Billie Holiday post-work - you could say I'm quite smitten for this newfound hobby of mine.
